It’s trans, not trans*

It’s trans men and trans women, not transmen and transwomen—trans is an adjective that answers “what kind of men/women"—cis works the same way

Never call trans men FTMs or trans women MTFs without their permission

Trans is short for transgender, it’s not plural for anything—trans person and trans people are both correct

Never use “born in the wrong body” or “used to be a boy and became a girl” or “biologically/genetically male/female”—all are just fancy ways to misgender someone (self identification with these phrases is different)

Transgendered is wrong, so is “a transgender” and “transgenders”

Being trans is not a sexuality nor is it a “sexual disorder” or any kind of disorder at all—gender identity disorder is not a real thing, and being trans isn’t a medical condition

“Transsexual” is generally considered an offensive term and should never be used to describe someone without their permission

Don’t refer to a trans person’s gender as their gender identity, it’s just their gender

Similarly don’t refer to their pronouns as “preferred pronouns"—they’re not preferred, they’re mandatory

Being gay is more than rainbows, and kisses, and smiles. Being gay is more than sunsets, and cuddles, and sleepovers. Being gay is more than “be yourself”, and I was “born this way”. Being gay is throwing a brick at the stonewall riots, and lynchings for holding your girlfriends hand. Being gay is yelling at police, sitting still as a preacher spits in your face while he damns you to hell. Being gay is not some aesthetic that straight people can use to consider themselves “progressive” because we both know you’re only on our side so you can watch. If I have to see one more goddamned video of a straight white girl making a rainbow makeup tutorial for pride I’m going to scream. Being a lesbian is not two girls have a secret sleepover, cuddling together sneaking kisses; it’s changing alone in the locker rooms because the other girls are lining up to change in the bathroom stalls so you won’t see them. Being gay is not going to the store and biting organic fruit with your hubby; it’s getting yelled at during back to school shopping because your daughter “shouldn’t have to grow up having two fags as parents. How will you appease her feminine side?” Being bisexual isn’t being straight passing, and having more options to date; it’s being excluded from both the straight and gay communities. Being trans is not some skinny white boy who passes; it’s a person of color being beat up in the woman’s restroom because “HE’S just a MAN trying to sneak a peak at the woman inside”, as if she herself is not a beautiful woman who just needs to piss. Being Queer isn’t dressing cute and wearing a rainbow flag; it’s living with AIDS, which means even though you now test negative because you’ve kept on your meds and are no long contagious, you can’t find a significant other due to fear and propaganda. Being intersex isn’t a “true born transgender” (how could you ever say that and no know you’re being offensive?!); it’s having doctors remove parts of your genitalia for no logical reason at all. Being asexual/greysexual is not being a tease and staying innocent forever; it’s being excluded from the Queer community for some stupid sense of entitlement about what is and isn’t LGBT. Being aromantic is not a fun out-spirited girl who knows how to have a good time; it’s being called a skank on a daily basis because you don’t feel romantic attachments.

I am not an aesthetic for you to use to feel included in the LGBT community. Just because I believe in black lives matter does not mean in any way that I am a person of color. The A stands for asexual and aromantic, not ally. You’re not a part of our community. You support us yes, but you aren’t us. That sounds harsh, I know. I do not intend to hurt your feelings but my struggles are real. So, please stop dismissing them. Actually support us, instead of kinda helping to make yourself feel better. So, support us please, but please don’t sexualize us, or use us for your aesthetic. I am a person. I live, and breathe, and feel. My experiences are real. Hear them. Pay attention. And then do something about it.

I am a white, bi/pansexual, gender nonconforming individual. If you have a problem with something I’ve said PLEASE correct me or tell me what I’ve said to offend you. I will be happy to admit if I’m in the wrong.

(I lumped pansexual in with bisexual because to quote my favorite human @jaxxgarcia “to suggest you need a whole new sexuality to be attracted to trans people is …what’s that words again idk OH gross”. [EDIT the quote meant “don’t feel the need to change your sexuality just because allies don’t understand the difference between bi and pan”. People who don’t think pansexuals exist are gross. Pan people exist, I inserted the quote at a weird spot I’m sorry.] I put agender, gender fluid, demi girl/boy etc under trans to conserve space. I put pan, bi, poly etc under bi to conserve space. It feels necessary for me to mention that The American Psychiatric Association has openly stated that you do not need to suffer from dysphoria to be transgender and also acknowledges the existence of non binary genders.

Here is the link. Here’s a quote defining transgender:

“Transgender is a non-medical term that has been used increasingly since the 1990s as an umbrella term describing individuals whose gender identity (inner sense of gender) or gender expression (outward performance of gender) differs from the sex or gender to which they were assigned at birth. Some people who use this term do not consider themselves as matching a binary gender category. In addition, new terms such as genderqueer, bigendered, and agendered are increasingly in use.”

Here’s the followup:

“Not all transgender people suffer from gender dysphoria and that distinction is important to keep in mind. Gender dysphoria and/or coming out as transgender can occur at any age.”

Here’s more about gender dysphoria.

Also, in early 2017 in Denmark it is no longer possible to “diagnose” someone with being transgender. Of course this doesn’t include dysphoria, just the act of being trans.

Gender Dysphoria is in the DSM-V, but being transgender is not. More on the changing of the terminology for the purpose of removing stigma.

Oh, and the American Psychological Association had something interesting to say, too:

“Is being transgender a mental disorder?

A psychological state is considered a mental disorder only if it causes significant distress or disability. Many transgender people do not experience their gender as distressing or disabling, which implies that identifying as transgender does not constitute a mental disorder.”

Conclusion: if the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric association, the DSM-V, and Denmark’s laws all agree that being trans isn’t a mental disorder, I’d be happy to sit on that fence.

Summary: gender isn’t binary and being transgender isn’t a mental illness.

YES, the high suicide rates stems from oppression, NOT because trans people are mentally fucked up inherently, because the suicide rate for INUIT TEENAGERS in Canada is THE WORST IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! It’s one of the leading causes of death among Aboriginal peoples in Canada.

My point is that trans people aren’t inherently fucked up and don’t suffer from mental illnesses because they’re trans, they suffer from mental illnesses because they are an at-risk group like any other minority.

Hey! Which source are you talking about? The first one was the Expert Q and A, and this is what it had to say about crossdressing:

If a man likes to dress in women’s clothes but does not want to be a woman and otherwise lives typically as a male, does he have a psychiatric disorder? No. Such a desire is called transvestitism and it is not a psychiatric disorder.

Unless it was one of the other sources? I’m not super keen on the phrase “transvestitism” since it’s a bit dated, but it acknowledges that it’s a separate thing from being transgender.

Also the American Psychological Association link makes a point to say:

While transgender is generally a good term to use, not everyone whose appearance or behavior is gender-nonconforming will identify as a transgender person.

The way that it’d defined here explains the difference between gender nonconforming peoples and transgender, but some of the people use “transgender” as an umbrella term for any/all gender nonconforming identities, which isn’t exactly here-nor-there at best, inaccurate at worst.

As many of you know, binary genders are a western construct. Here is a SUPER COOL INTERACTIVE EXPLORATION TOOL provided by the PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) that tells us about nonbinary cultures around the world! It’s an interactive map where you can click on pins and it’ll tell you information about the genders of the culture! It’s not super in depth, but it’s a great survey!

So basically, it’s not that “other cultures have nonbinary genders”, but more like “other cultures don’t have a gender binary to begin with! Gender is a construct and is constantly evolving.

A real anthropologist will never shit on you for making up a name for your gender. It doesn’t matter if “it’s silly”, you’re subverting the western tradition of the binary and that’s super rad!

Some stuff to look out for, and explanations for each:

(Terms are bolded, explanations are italicized)

-LGBTPN - (started by exclusionists, but has traveled outside of the group. This term does not necessarily mean that they’re a dick- there’s a good chance they don’t even know it was started by them- but please be cautious anyway)

-anything that involves aces/aros/aroaces and UwU/Tumblr culture/etc. - (a lot of exclusionists like to dress asexuality up like it’s just weird kids around puberty who don’t feel sexual attraction because, well, they’re kids, and like asexuality is a tumblr-exclusive sexuality. They tend to make posts like this to mock ace people because they believe these things- think of a person who says something okay, but with heavy sarcasm that makes the words pointed like a dagger. This is, of course, another instance where you need to check the OP more than anything else, along with whoever reblogged it, since plenty of people make ‘uwu valid’ posts about other sexualities. They’re kind of annoying for other sexualities, yeah, but the reason they’re more harmful for the ace community is because of their belief that aces are a ‘Tumblr special snowflake’ category, along with the ‘aces are the sexuality fandom’ post.)

- Specifically anything that mentions cishet aces/Aros being valid. - (there’s this odd culture in exclusionist circles where they will attempt to be actively harmful to ace peeps, actively campaigning for Ace exclusion, talking about how they’re not real, mentioning aces as ‘Tumblr culture’ and stuff, but also somehow insisting ‘I do think they’re valid, they’re just not LGBT.’ Basically, what they’re doing is saying ‘cishet aces/aros, you’re valid uwu you’re just not real, not LGBT, need to realize you’re harmful, and I want you to die.’- and no, that’s not an exaggeration.)

-Things that mention any variation of ‘Cishets’/‘Hets Can’t Be LGBT.’ - (this can also be against bi/pan/poly people in an opposite-gender relationship, as well as gay or straight trans people. On the surface, it looks like a ‘yeah no fucking shit’ kind of post, but exclusionists of all of these people have a tendency to call everyone Cishets- which, of course, includes het aces, het aros, and Cis aroaces. The reason this is harmful should be clear, but in case it isn’t- bisexuals, pansexuals, and polysexuals are still bi, pan, and poly, even in an opposite sex relationship, straight trans people are still trans, gay trans people are gay and trans, not ‘straight in disguise’, and aces/aros/aroaces are ace/aro/aroace. This line of thought is essentially excluding almost everyone except Cis gays and cis people in same-sex relationships (if the person is a terf, otherwise it would exclude everyone not in a same-sex relationship- including Bisexual, Pansexual, and Polysexual peeps.)

-URLs that mention ‘allo’- (this is a strictly exclusionist thing. Allosexual is a word used by Aces to describe anyone who isn’t ace, and it’s counterpart, Alloromantic, is used by aros to describe those who feel romantic attraction. These words are harmless- the Aro/ace versions of a trans person calling Cis people Cis- but, for whatever reason, they feel that us calling them Allo is somehow attacking them. Because of this, a lot of people will take the word ‘allo’ and put it in their URL, assuming that us calling them allo is like us saying ‘you’re dirty for feeling sexual/romantic attraction.’ Basically, they think of allo as a kind of slur that they’re reclaiming, which is extremely wrong, but w/e. A lot of us have kinda been shamed out of using these terms most of the time, so be cautious of any post mentioning ‘Allo’ nowadays.)

- Userbox Tumblrs and Stimboard/Moodboard tumblrs. - (I have no idea whatsoever as to why this is, but a lot of userbox and Stimboard tumblrs are run by exclusionists. No, this isn’t saying ‘don’t go reblogging userboxes or stimboards’, this is basically more of a ‘if they don’t have a banner that says ‘exclusionists donmt interact’, please check their blogs.’.)

- Pride Icon tumblrs that make icons of characters like Jughead Jones or Todd Chavez with flags that aren’t ace/ Pride Icon Tumblrs who refuse to make icons with the ace flag. (Before you get pissed, especially considering how popular Riverdale has become, these characters are very much ace. Jughead is Aroace. These characters are confirmed, meaning that they, especially Jughead, should not be made with any other flags. Also, the second one should be obvious why.)

That’s all I can think of offhand, feel free to add more.

- ‘Cringe’ posts that focus on aro and/or ace people being (implied as) obnoxious or irrational. - (Humour posts wherein the punchline is how cringey an aro and/or ace person is being and seeing them dragged for it, usually wherein the cringe factor is said person using aspec terminology freely, making jokes about their own identity the equivalent of which y’all would never bat an eyelash at if it were made by a gay person about being gay - or just generally referring to their own identity. Alternatively, posts that make fun of aro/ace people in general being supposedly cringey or unreasonable in defense of their identities with things like suggesting that, uh… aphobes are bad. You’d think that this would be fairly obvious and something that only exclusionists get into in the first place; and yet, the number of times I’ve seen inclusionist ‘allies’ wantonly reblog this nonsense is… too many. Step up, start critiquing the ideas you share and stop pretending like you don’t already know humour is one of the greatest tools of invalidation in the oppressor’s toolbox if you want to have the right to claim that you don’t hate us.)

A recent example of the first form of this is the BBC Sherlock/‘asexual agreement’ post, the meaning behind which would actually be quite obvious for anyone who bothered to consider the asexual perspective for more than 2 secionds before acting on their driving love of making fun of us.

The second form, which correlates more reliably to use by actual exclusionists but that I have still seen in use by purported allies, includes the aforementioned, infamous ‘aphobe blocklist’ meme and jokes like ‘OP is an aphobe’ or ‘[x character/real person] asexual moodboard’ jokes.

Are… are any of you serious?

Just FYI: if you reblog these posts, especially as a person with the education and awareness on oppression dynamics that comes standard in Tumblr culture, you are already aphobic.

This point is hardly a question of ‘not knowing.’ Whether or not you consciously recognised your intent in giving support to these posts as Being Aphobic, I can assume that you were acting on some degree of (latent) aphobia. And if you reblogged them as an aro/ace person, it’s still likely that you have some degree of internalised aphobia that you need to work out.

Starting today, June 11, U.S. internet providers will be legally allowed to censor and block websites and apps, and force you to pay extra fees to to access your favorite places online. Your internet sanctuaries, the communities you are part of, the ones you have help build up, could be decimated.

Will it happen today? No. Next week? Probably not. The changes will not be swift. They will come piece by piece. A slow, tempered death to the free and open internet we love.
